BETWEEN   UTOPIAS   AND   HOPES

Athena Culture intends to propose a new round of conferences from 2023. After the fears of the 21st century, and a two-year period marked by an unimaginable pandemic that has allowed us to imagine the worst dystopias, we are ready to tackle this new strand under various facets: economic, literary, sociological, philosophical-psychoanalytic.
The optimistic view will not remove the concerns about climate, migration, virological crises and the new challenges of biotechnology. But rather than unproductive anti-utopias, we want to believe that humanity's journey is still a long one. Where the lights and shadows meet, it is a matter of working to cultivate reasonable hopes. What will be the good life 3.0 of the human being in the age of artificial intelligence, in a globalized and learned world? What lessons have you learned to turn things around? What knowledge will be needed for education of the future and with what ethics will we face the right existential choices? Will it change the meaning of our life and what will be a happy life?

CONSCIOUSNESS

Understanding the mechanisms of consciousness is perhaps the greatest challenge for modern science, and certainly for our understanding of the mechanisms of the brain.
Geneticist and neuroscientist Edoardo Boncinelli and neuroscientist and ethologist Giorgio Vallortigara develop a close dialog on the major problems surrounding the nature of consciousness. We all subjectively know what it is, but there is no sensible knowledge of its nature and its material basis.
What are the neural bases of consciousness? And what is its biological function? Is consciousness only present in humans or other animals? Could it be made in a machine?​

Edoardo Boncinelli, Italian Geneticist and science writer (born Rhodes 1941). He graduated in physics at the University of Florence, where he devoted himself to the study of genetics and molecular biology with particular reference to the embryonic development of higher animals and humans. The deepening of the mechanisms of formation of the body axis and cerebral cortex led his research to intertwine with neuroscience and the investigation of higher mental functions. From 1968 to 1992 he worked at the International Institute of Genetics and Biophysics of the CNR in Naples; he moved to Milan, where he directed the laboratory of molecular biology at the University Scientific Institute "San Raffaele" and the Center for the Study of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology of the CNR. He currently teaches biology and genetics at the "San Raffaele" University of Life and Health (Milan). He and his team are responsible for identifying a family of genes to control the correct development of the body. In addition to his scientific research work, B. has embarked on a brilliant career as an essayist and science writer; among his books are The Soul of Technology (2006, winner of the Merck Serono literary prize); Letter to a child who will live 100 years (2010), on the new frontiers of genetics; in 2012, Science does not need God, What remains of the soul and The Life of our Mind; the autobiography One Life is not enough. History of a genius incapacitated (2013); We who have the free soul (with G. Giorello, 2014); Genetics and healing (2014); all in 2015, Homo faber (with G. Sciarretta), We are culture, The seven ingredients of science, the bilingual essay Why do you eat? - Why do we eat? and The universal form of this node. The culture of Dante (with M. Arcangeli); both in 2016, Against the Sacred. Because faiths make us stupid and Enchantment and disillusionment: Leopardi (with G. Giorello); in 2017, She and I. Beyond life and The magnificent 100. Dictionary of intangible words (with M. Arcangeli); The butterfly and the chrysalis. The Birth of Experimental Science (2018); Evil. Natural and social history of suffering (2019); in 2020, Just be alive. Chronicles from the Limit is The Principle of Undetermination; in 2022, the collection of aphorisms Archibald and the Human essay. B. is a collaborator of the "Corriere della Sera".

MORAL NEUROBIOLOGY

Where does morale come from? What are our values based on? How do we know what's good and what's bad? For centuries, philosophers and theologians have researched human nature in search of an answer. There have been many brilliant insights and subtle arguments. Only today, however, can those insights and arguments find a "firm" link to the evolutionary history that has allowed us and our brain to become who we are. Patricia Churchland invites us to come to terms with the biological processes and mechanisms that have helped shape forms and ways of our moral obligation. The most recent discoveries in the fields of evolutionary biology, genetics and cognitive neuroscience thus become the essential tools for navigating the intricate forest of moral questions. It is not a question, however, of giving in to the temptation of easy scientism but of recognizing that only if we find out what makes us able to take care of ourselves and others can we understand how the social animal Homo sapiens has become a moral animal.

Patricia Churchland, is professor emerita of philosophy at the University of California at San Diego. One of the founders of neurophilosophy, he has for many years been dedicated to the attempt to apply the latest acquisitions of neuroscience to major philosophical questions. Among his books translated into Italian: The computational brain (with T.J. Sejnowski, the Mill 1995), Neurobiology of Morality (Raffaello Cortina, 2012), The ego as brain (Raffaello Cortina, 2014).

In Several, worldrenowned primatologist Frans de Waal draws on years of observations about the behavior of humans and other animals to show that, despite the existence of a link between gender and biological sex, biology does not automatically endorse traditional gender roles in human societies.
Supporting his theses with references to chimpanzees and bonobos, de Waal questions widely held beliefs about masculinity and femininity, and common views about authority, leadership, filial ties, and sexual behavior. In chimpanzee communities, the male is dominant and violent, while among the bonobos the female prevails and society is relatively peaceful. In both species, power is not male and both sexes show real leadership.
With humor, clarity, and sensitivity, the book broadens the discussion about gender dynamics in human societies, promoting an inclusive model that embraces differences, rather than denies them.
